Rebates for Heat Pumps
It’s a good time to upgrade your inefficient home heating system. There are rebates currently available through the Home Renovation Rebates Program from BC Hydro, and the CleanBC Better Homes Program funded by the Province of BC and the Government of Canada.
The rebate offered by BC Hydro is $1000 for qualifying air-source mini-split or multi-split heat pump systems installed to replace electric furnaces or baseboard heaters.

The heat pump incentives from the CleanBC Better Homes program are for homes converting from oil or gas heat, and include $3000 for qualifying mini or multi-split systems, $3000 for
qualifying variable speed central systems, and $1200 for qualifying conventional central heat pump systems.
Both rebate programs are combined into one online application form.
There are additional municipal top-up rebates available from select municipalities, which are automatically added when rebate applications are processed. These top-ups are only offered when an eligible heat pump system is replacing fossil fuel heat, not when replacing electric heat. Currently there is a $350 top-up rebate for all residents of the Capital Regional District (CRD), an additional $350 top-up for residents of Saanich, Central Saanich, and North Saanich, and an extra $2000 top-up for residents in the City of Victoria!
An EnerGuide Home Evaluation is not required to receive a heat pump rebate, but there is a $200 incentive offered for homeowners who choose to get one. Some municipalities also offer a top-up of $150 on this rebate.
There are additional home energy rebates available. Try the rebate search tool on the CleanBC Better Homes website to find all the rebates that may be applicable to your home. There are also a number of eligibility requirements, so be sure to review the Program Requirements and the Terms and Conditions for all those details.

Ductless Mini-Split Heat Pumps
The inverter component allows the outdoor unit to vary its speed and output to match the required capacity of the indoor unit. Thus, an inverter heat pump can achieve 30% more operating efficiency than conventional models.
Since mini-split systems are usually either ductless or have limited ducting, they eliminate energy losses via the ducting associated with central forced-air systems. Duct losses can be significant if the ducts are not sealed properly, or are installed in an unconditioned space such as an attic or crawlspace.
Envirotemp Refrigeration carries a full line of mini-split and multi-split heat pump systems from Tempstar, featuring super-efficient inverter technology. If you are looking for a professional, properly sized and configured installation, contact Envirotemp for a free estimate or call 250-893-4530.

Ductless Heat Pumps
A very effective way to offset your electrical bills is
to add a heat pump to your home. Our moderate climate on Vancouver Island is
ideal for air source heat pumps.
Air source heat pumps capture heat from the
outdoor air using the process of refrigeration. This heat is then transferred
and released indoors. The heat pump works the same way an air conditioner does,
but in reverse. In fact, a heat pump can also cool a home during the summer.
Because the heat pump simply moves heat from one place to another, it is three
to four times more efficient than using electrical resistance or burning fossil
fuel to create heat.
Many homes are heated with inefficient oil, gas or
electric furnaces. These can easily have central heat pump systems added,
utilizing existing ductwork to create an efficient system. But what about homes
with electric baseboard heat and no ductwork?

Fairly fresh on the scene in North America are inverter-driven ductless heat pumps, also referred to as mini-splits. These systems consist of a small suitcase-sized heat pump located outside, which can accommodate up to five units inside. Multiple indoor units effectively create different zones within the house.
If
properly sized, a single wall-mounted unit, or "head", can heat up to 1,000 square feet of space, even if
the floor plan is not completely open. Each head is controlled with a remote
that can change temperature settings, fan speeds, and air direction.
A ductless system can usually be installed in one day with
very little disruption in the home. Once the wall head or floor console is mounted, everything
is done from the outside. This makes for a very clean installation.
The inverter technology enables the system to
modulate the output based on ambient temperature, therefore it always consumes
the least amount of power necessary to heat or cool the home. The latest
inverter heat pumps have a coefficient of performance (COP) of up to 5, meaning
they put out five times the heat energy than the electrical energy consumed to produce that heat. These
systems can often heat a whole house using the same or even less power than
just one baseboard heater. Inverter systems can operate at full capacity in freezing outdoor temperatures, down to -17°C, and at reduced capacity in even colder temperatures. Inverter technology offers the added
benefits of quiet operation and reduced wear and tear on the compressor. These
systems are so quiet many people cannot hear them running.Contact Envirotemp to arrange for a free estimate. A qualified, experienced technician will provide you with a proposal for a system that will meet all of your heating and cooling needs as efficiently as possible. We carry a full range of ductless heat pump models from Tempstar, so we can design a system for any size home.
